Learn English at YALI

YALI offers its students an intensive curriculum where they focus on English proficiency in all the following areas - listening, speaking, reading and writing. YALI's English language proficiency program is separated into nine levels, which on average takes about two years to complete.

YALI conducts eight 5-week terms per year, teaching English to adult language learners, enrollment averaging 3,000 students per term. In addition to its regular program, YALI also offers a number of skill-oriented special and elective courses. YALI's facilities consist of four three-story buildings which include classrooms, computer labs, a library and a café.

The language skills learned at YALI will be the gateway to a graduate's success whether they will work in an English speaking environment, or they intend to study at an English-speaking academic institution.

The Curriculum

The courses offered at YALI are offered for all levels of English. Whether the student is a novice or has advanced knowledge in English, YALI provides a course at each step.

Beginner: The beginner level is intended for students with little or no prior exposure to English. Students will learn to read and write using the English alphabet, and acquire the skills needed to conduct simple conversations concerning daily needs. Students begin building a vocabulary base and are introduced to basic grammar and syntax rules. On completion of this level, students should be able to read simple texts, and speak about routine social and work requirements.

Intermediate: The intermediate level emphasizes techniques for reading, research and composition in English, as well as advanced conversational skills. A variety of media is used to reinforce listening and reading comprehension. Students are trained in advanced grammar and syntax and concentrate on expanding their vocabulary base. At the end of this level, students should be able to speak, read and write confidently on various subjects.

Advanced: The advanced level emphasizes overall reading comprehension, advanced writing skills, technical grammar and continued vocabulary acquisition. In addition to standard texts vital to the program, students in the 6/7 level have the opportunity to enroll in courses that reflect their personal interest. Students who successfully complete this level will possess English skills to prepare them for the TOFEL exam and acceptable for academic or professional use.
